In the many initiatives that the Air Force & USAFE are doing to promote healthier living, educating children could be the most influential. One of these initiatives was the Ratatouille Tour of French Command Chef Jean-Marc Laurent, who stopped by RAF Mildenhall’s Youth Center on June 23 & 24 to speak to some of our base youth population. The tour was aimed to teach children how to prepare healthy food as well as show that healthier food options can be just as good if not even better than their alternatives.

About 20 children acted as Chef Jean-Marc’s sous chefs, an amazing opportunity for them to learn basic cooking skills and techniques. During the demonstration Chef Jean Marc spoke about healthy cooking and snacking to the more than 15 families that were in attendance, who were all able to participate in the taste testing of the delicious meal that was prepared.

“This program idea was a combination of our command youth programs and business specialists”, Jean-Marc Laurent, command chef said. “The goal is to demonstrate to youth that making healthy eating choices is easy and that eating healthy can taste good. By allowing them to help in the kitchen and then taste, together with their families, what healthy food they’ve prepared will hopefully encourage them to want to eat more fruits and vegetables at home and at school,” Laurent said.

It was a great success and hopefully all who were involved, both tasting and cooking, took away valuable lessons: that healthy food is both easy to make and extremely tasty!
